World Games President Perurena: Chengdu hosting event's best edition ever

2025年08月12日 15:47:57

Jose Perurena, President of the International World Games Association, praised Chengdu for hosting what he described as the finest edition in the event's history, during an exclusive interview with CGTN Sports Scene's Zhu Mandan.

The World Games, Perurena explained, is a multi-sport event for disciplines recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) but not yet part of the Olympic program. The competition serves as a global stage for those sports to showcase their potential, adding to their case to earn spots at the Olympics.

Calling Chengdu's turn as host a "gift," the Spaniard lauded the city as modern, clean, and green – a vivid example of China's remarkable progress.

"What impresses me most is Chengdu's outstanding organizational capacity," Perurena said, singling out the bold decision to stage the Opening Ceremony outside a stadium – an unconventional choice that added major logistical complexity. "At first, it seemed a daunting challenge, but it turned out to be one of the most spectacular Opening Ceremonies in the history of the World Games. Chengdu has shown it can host any major international event."

This is the 80-year-old's fifth visit to Chengdu. And even though the journey has been filled with duties related to the World Games, memories from past trips remain vivid – especially the energy and joy of the host city's youth.

The 2025 World Games, he noted, strikes a balance between modern and traditional sports. Events like skating, climbing, and motor surfing appeal to younger audience members, while wushu and dragon boat racing celebrate cultural heritage.

"Dragon boat racing, part of canoe sports, is especially popular in China," Perurena added. "I'm confident it will be one of the standout successes of the Games."

Chronicling the evolution of sports on the schedule, he pointed out that all participating federations must be recognized by the IOC, which is responsible for final Olympic inclusion. The World Games, however, has more flexibility in updating its program. Working with analytics firms, organizers track youth trends to keep the event dynamic and relevant.

Gender equality has also been a priority. Four years ago, the organizing committee and Chengdu agreed to ensure equal opportunities – this year, 15 more women are competing than men.

Another innovation is the "baby room" policy, allowing female competitors with infants to bring their children and receive dedicated support – an initiative widely praised for meeting the family needs of the athletes.

Perurena also spoke about his decision to step down.

"I knew Chengdu would deliver the best Games in history, so I chose to pass the torch here,”the long-time sports administrator revealed.

His most enduring legacy, he believes, is ensuring that every athlete enjoys the same high standards as their peers who participate in the Olympics.

"There are no first-class and second-class athletes – only athletes," Perurena concluded. "Not all sports can be part of the Olympics, but we must provide the same top-tier competition conditions. Athletes want to represent their country, wear national colors, and compete in the best possible environment. That is the legacy I leave for the future of the World Games."
